The service

Parchment People is a free tool for building and running Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition characters. It's run by one person as an independent project. There's no charge and no subscription.

Your account

You need an account to save characters. Use an email address you can actually access, keep your password to yourself, and take responsibility for what happens under your account. You must be 13 or older.

Your characters are yours

Everything you write - characters, backstories, notes, uploaded images - remains yours. No ownership is claimed over it.

What is needed is permission to actually run the service on your behalf. By putting content into Parchment People you give a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, back up, copy, transmit, adapt in format, and display that content - for the sole purpose of operating the app for you and for the people you've chosen to share with. "Adapt in format" means the technical kind: resizing an uploaded portrait, or rendering your sheet into a PDF. This licence exists only so the service can function, and it ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to backups rolling over as described in the privacy policy.

Your content is not used to train machine-learning models, not sold, not published, and not shown to anyone you haven't shared it with. It is processed automatically where running the app requires it - saving and backing it up, building your exports, searching within your own sheet - and never for any purpose beyond giving the service back to you.

Who owns the app

Your characters are yours; the app around them isn't. The software, source code, design, layout, and the Parchment People name and logo belong to Parchment People and are protected by copyright and trade mark law. Using the service doesn't transfer any of that to you.

You're welcome to link to the site, write about it, and show screenshots of your own characters. What you can't do is copy the code or design to run a competing version, or use the name or logo in a way that suggests your project is this one, or is endorsed by it. Game rules content is a separate matter, covered below.

What not to do

• Don't upload anything unlawful, or any image you don't have the right to use.
• Don't use the app to harass anyone - including through group notes or character content visible to your party.
• Don't try to reach other people's data, break the service, or hammer it with automated traffic.

Accounts doing any of the above can be suspended or removed.

Game content and attribution

Parchment People is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored, or approved by Wizards of the Coast LLC. Dungeons & Dragons and D&D are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast, used here only to describe what the tool is for.

The game rules content in the app - class, race and background options, starting equipment, proficiencies and spells - comes from the System Reference Document 5.1 by Wizards of the Coast, made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. Spell data is retrieved from Open5e, which publishes the same SRD material.

Content from sourcebooks outside the SRD isn't distributed by Parchment People. If you type such content into your own character, that's between you and your books.

Availability, and keeping your own copy

The app is provided as it is, with no guarantee that it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of bugs. Features may change or be removed. It's a hobby project run by one person, not a company with an on-call team.

Keep your own backups of anything you'd hate to lose. Every character can be exported as JSON or PDF from its sheet. That export is the safety net, and it's there precisely because no promise is being made about permanence.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, Parchment People isn't liable for lost data, lost time, or anything that follows from the service being unavailable or behaving unexpectedly. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't legally be excluded.

Ending it

You can delete your account at any time from the account page, which removes your data as described in the privacy policy. Accounts may be removed for breaking the rules above, or if the service shuts down - in which case there'll be reasonable notice to export your characters.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction. If you're a consumer elsewhere, this doesn't take away rights you have under your own country's law.
