Help
Short answers to the things people ask most. If yours isn't here, send it over - there's a feedback form behind your avatar in the top right of the app, or you can email hello@parchmentpeople.com.
Getting started
Do I need an account? To save characters, yes. To look around, no - there's a fully working example sheet that needs nothing at all.
Is it free? Yes. No subscription, no paid tier, no adverts.
How do I make a character? New character gives you a blank sheet, which is deliberate - you fill in the name, class, race and background as you decide them. Once those are set, use Suggestions on the Identity card and the sheet will offer the proficiencies and starting equipment your choices grant.
Building a character
Where do proficiencies and starting equipment come from? The Suggestions action on the Identity card reads your class, race and background and offers what they grant, as chips you accept or ignore. Nothing is applied without you choosing it.
How do I level up? Level up on the Identity card opens a wizard covering hit points, an ability score increase or a feat, spell slots and new features. Everything is applied in one go at the end, so cancelling half way changes nothing.
How do I add spells? On the Spells tab, search by name. Results come from the SRD via Open5e. Anything not in the SRD you can add by hand, with whatever text you like.
Can I use content from books that aren't the SRD? You can type it in yourself - the app doesn't restrict what you write. What it can't do is ship that content, because only the SRD is openly licensed.
Does multiclassing work? Yes, throughout. Proficiency bonus, hit dice and spell slots all account for the full class split.
At the table
How do rests work? The Combat tab has short and long rest buttons. A short rest resets death saves, special dice and short-rest features; a long rest restores hit points and everything else. Hit dice are spent manually, because how many you burn is your decision.
What does the concentration tracker do? Mark the spell you're concentrating on and the sheet will prompt you for a constitution save when you take damage, working out the DC.
Can I track limited-use features? Yes. Give a feature a number of uses and how it recharges, and it appears as tappable pips on the Core tab. Rests refill them.
Playing with other people
How do I share a character with my DM? Your DM makes a group and gives you its invite code. Join with the code, wait for them to approve you, then choose which of your characters to share.
Can my DM edit my sheet? No. Shared sheets are read-only for everyone but you. DMs can keep private notes on each player, which only they can see.
Can other players see my characters? Only the ones you've explicitly shared, and only within that group.
Your data
Is my work saved automatically? Yes, a couple of seconds after you stop typing. The save indicator tells you where things stand.
I broke something - can I undo it? Cmd or Ctrl+Z undoes recent edits in the current session. Beyond that, every sheet keeps a version history you can restore from, and restoring is itself undoable.
Can I get my characters out? Any sheet exports as JSON, which imports back in, or as a printable PDF. Worth keeping a copy of anything you'd hate to lose.
How do I delete my account? From the account page. It removes your characters, groups and uploads for real. See the privacy policy for exactly what goes and what's kept.
When something goes wrong
I've forgotten my password. Use the forgot-password link on the sign-in screen. If the email doesn't arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder.
Something's broken. Please report it - open the menu behind your avatar and choose Send feedback. It records which page you were on and what browser you're using, which is usually the difference between a bug being fixable and not.
Who makes this? One person, as an independent project. It isn't affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
